Ceramic decking is one of the most common solutions for outdoor flooring, valued for its resistance and aesthetic variety. However, like any material, it has advantages and limitations worth knowing before making a decision.

In this guide, we explain what ceramic decking is, its real advantages and disadvantages, and how composite decking compares as an alternative.

What Is ceramic decking?

Ceramic decking is an outdoor flooring made from ceramic, used on terraces, balconies, patios, gardens and pool surrounds. It can imitate the appearance of natural materials such as wood, stone or marble, offering a wide variety of colours, textures and patterns.

It is a practical and elegant solution, valued for its abrasion resistance, dimensional stability and ease of cleaning. However, like any material, it has advantages and disadvantages worth knowing before deciding.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of ceramic decking?

Abrasion and stain resistance

Ceramic is a highly wear-resistant material and easy to clean. It is stain-resistant and does not require treatments with oils, varnishes or sealants.

Dimensional stability

It does not expand or contract significantly with temperature changes — unlike wood.

Aesthetic variety

Available in a wide range of colours, patterns and textures, including finishes that imitate wood, stone or marble.

Low maintenance

It does not require periodic treatments. Regular cleaning with water is generally sufficient.

Durability

When properly installed and not subjected to impacts, ceramic flooring can last for decades.

Slippery when wet

This is one of the main disadvantages of ceramic decking. Over time, the surface can become quite slippery when wet — a safety risk, especially near swimming pools or in high-traffic areas.

Heat absorption

In warm climates, ceramic absorbs more heat than other materials, becoming uncomfortable to walk on barefoot — particularly in dark colours and under direct sunlight.

Fragile under impact

It cracks or breaks relatively easily due to falling objects or large temperature variations. A broken piece requires replacement — and it is not always possible to find the same batch or reference.

Requires a level base

The installation of ceramic decking, particularly when bonded, requires a solid, level concrete slab. This can represent a significant additional cost when the base is not prepared.

Puddles

With bonded flooring, visible puddles are common in areas where the base is slightly uneven, as the water has nowhere to drain.

Joints

The joints of bonded ceramic flooring tend to accumulate dirt and residue over time, requiring more careful cleaning to maintain a good appearance.

No access to the area beneath

Once installed (bonded), it is not possible to access the area below the flooring without breaking pieces and redoing the installation — which makes inspection, cleaning or access to infrastructure difficult.

The Alternative: CDECK® Composite Decking

If you’re looking for a practical and resistant outdoor flooring, but without the safety and comfort limitations of ceramic, CDECK® composite deckingaddresses each disadvantage:

Slip-resistant even when wet

CDECK® has a Class 3 slip-resistance rating (EN 15534), the highest available. The surface maintains grip even in wet areas, making it safe for pool surrounds and for walking barefoot.

Impact and shock resistant

Unlike ceramic, CDECK® does not crack or break from falling objects or temperature variations. It offers high mechanical resistance and maintains structural integrity over the years.

Adapts to any base

No level concrete slab required. The Quick-Fix® system adapts to concrete slabs, existing surfaces, uneven areas or surfaces that cannot be drilled (such as waterproof membranes). It can be installed on compacted soil with a suitable structure.

No puddles

CDECK® is a raised flooring that allows water to drain beneath the boards, eliminating surface puddles.

Access to the area beneath without breaking anything

The Quick-Fix® system allows individual boards to be opened and removed — for cleaning, access to drains, inspection chambers or other infrastructure. No breaking pieces, no redoing the installation.

Quick installation with Quick-Fix®

Patented system by IHT using just one screw per board — installation up to 3 times faster*. Boards can be manufactured to measure (between 1,8 and 3 metres).

Available in two ranges: CDECK Original® and CDECK WUUDE®. Prices per board from €19.07 (VAT included).

*Result observed in an internal installation test (1 installer), on a test module of approximately 3 m², on a drillable cement base, comparing the Quick-Fix® installation system (1 screw per board) with a traditional clip fixing system. Time may vary depending on the base, cuts and site conditions.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions about ceramic decking

It can be, especially when wet and after some time of use. It is one of the most relevant disadvantages of ceramic for outdoor flooring, particularly near swimming pools or in frequently used walkways. CDECK® composite decking, by comparison, is slip-resistant even when wet (Class 3, EN 15534).

Yes. Ceramic can crack or break from falling objects or large temperature variations. Replacing a broken piece can be difficult if the batch or reference is no longer available.

Yes. Ceramic tends to absorb more heat than other materials, becoming uncomfortable to walk on barefoot on sunny days — especially in dark colours. Lighter colours help to minimise this effect.

Yes, in most cases. The installation of bonded ceramic flooring requires a solid, level concrete slab. This requirement can represent a significant additional cost, particularly when the base is not prepared. CDECK® composite decking, on the other hand, adapts to different types of base, including uneven surfaces and compacted soil.

Ceramic decking is abrasion-resistant and easy to clean, but can be slippery when wet, breaks under impact, absorbs a lot of heat and requires a level slab. CDECK® composite decking is slip-resistant, impact-resistant, adapts to different bases and allows individual board removal for maintenance or access to infrastructure. For a more detailed analysis, see the guide Outdoor Decking: Which One to Choose and Why?

Yes. The existing ceramic flooring can serve as a base for the installation of CDECK® with the Quick-Fix® system, provided it is in good structural condition. To find out the best solution for your space, request a quote.
